Tournament Review

The 2012 edition of the Beach Tennis World Championships saw the tournament move from its home of the past three years - Foro Italico in Rome, Italy - for the first time. And it was not just World Championships titles that were won in Burgas but new beach tennis records were also up for grabs.

Two-time champions Luca Meliconi and Simona Briganti were bidding to make history by becoming the first players to claim a hat-trick of wins at the World Championships.

While both Meliconi and partner Alessandro Calbucci in the men's event and Laura Olivieri and Simona Briganti in the women’s event, were attempting to become the first teams to successfully defend the title.

Italian players have dominated the World Championships since it began in 2009, winning the men's and women's events every year, but could a change of venue bring about a shift in power on court in 2012?

Despite players from 15 nations being involved, it turned out to be an all Italian affair on finals day.

On the women’s side Briganti and Olivieri continued their phenomenal run of form to successfully fend off former World Champion Giulia Spazzoli and her partner Federica Bacchetta to hold on to the title in a thrilling 64 46 64 final.

On the men’s side Alessandro Calbucci and Luca Meliconi were unable to emulate their female counterparts as their World Champion status was taken away from them by Paolo Tazzari and Marco Garavini in an enthralling three set final 57 63 64.
